Intro to Set Theory

We started today with the Quiz - we will certainly have quizzes when listed on the calendar but we may also have other quizzes and assessments that are not listed.  Be ready and on time!!

Today we saw the following new language:

  • Set - a collection of objects
  • Element - an object in the set
  • Subset - a set that is fully contained within a larger set
  • Complement - the elements that don't fit into the original set
    • A is the Original set then A' is the complement
  • Empty Set - a set with no elements in it
  • Disjoint Set - 2 sets that have no common elements
There is a lot of notation we need to be aware of
A - is all of the elements in A
n(A) - is the number of elements in A
A\B - is the set of A that does not include any elements of B
B\A - is the set of B that does not include any elements of A
AUB = is the set of elements A OR B

Day 1 - Off to a good start

Although today felt like a slow start it was a good way to get to know each other and begin to look at how thinking and communication mathematically can be just as important and challenging as number crunching.

A few tips for solving big puzzles:

  • Look for patterns
  • Letters may represent numbers in a pattern
  • Coloured or shaded patterns may be used as well
  • Break big problems into smaller chunks
    • Instead of trying to apply a strategy for 10 items to select, try applying strategy to only 3 items, then 4, then 5 etc
    • There may not be an answer key for everything we do,
Today we did our first assignment.
  • Create your own pattern or logic puzzle
  • Assessed upon
    • Can the pattern be found?  Does it work?
    • Explain your pattern and how to find the next steps
      • does your explanation clearly demonstrate how to find the next step?
    • Complete your own pattern
      • did you complete it correctly? at all?
