Day 1 - Off to a good start

Although today felt like a slow start it was a good way to get to know each other and begin to look at how thinking and communication mathematically can be just as important and challenging as number crunching.

A few tips for solving big puzzles:

  • Look for patterns
  • Letters may represent numbers in a pattern
  • Coloured or shaded patterns may be used as well
  • Break big problems into smaller chunks
    • Instead of trying to apply a strategy for 10 items to select, try applying strategy to only 3 items, then 4, then 5 etc
    • There may not be an answer key for everything we do,
Today we did our first assignment.
  • Create your own pattern or logic puzzle
  • Assessed upon
    • Can the pattern be found?  Does it work?
    • Explain your pattern and how to find the next steps
      • does your explanation clearly demonstrate how to find the next step?
    • Complete your own pattern
      • did you complete it correctly? at all?
